Top 10 Things to Do in Durres, Albania

I am always marvelled when people say they visited Durres and did not have a swell time. Durres? You gotta be kidding me!

Now, there are just 2 reasons why this could happen. Either you don’t like moving outdoors at all or you had no what of knowing of all.

Let’s go through 10 activities you can engage in in Durres.

Number 10, Visit the Durres Amphitheatre

The Durres Amphitheatre in Albania, hands down one of the most magnificent ancient architectural marvels you’ll come across in the entire Balkans. Believe it or not, this breathtaking structure, constructed way back in 100 AD by the renowned Hadrian, remained hidden from the world until the 1960s when it was finally rediscovered!

For a whopping 300 years, this amphitheatre hosted countless events and drew crowds of up to 20,000 spectators. That was back in its heyday though but just try to wrap your mind around the sheer scale of it all.

Interestingly, what really piques the curiosity of several people is the fascinating connection between the Durres Amphitheatre and the transition of the Roman Empire to Christianity. Within this site, you’ll be treated to the sight of a chapel that will take your breath away. Along with its breathtaking wall mosaics depicting saints, it’s a vivid testament to how this amphitheatre evolved into a place of religious significance as time went on.

This amphitheatre is a must-visit spot for anyone intrigued by ancient wonders and civilizations.

Number 9, Explore the Archeological Museum

The restoration of this museum was only completed and the doors swung open to the public in 2015 but it has quickly risen to become a must-see place.

Only the first floor of the museum has been fully transformed to showcase around 2100 fascinating artefacts that span from the time before the city’s very existence until the 4th century AD and for a place that holds the title of being the largest archaeological museum in all of Albania, you’re sure to be thrilled by the captivating objects from prehistoric times, the archaic period, and the glorious days of antiquity.

Among the items in the museum, you’ll discover ancient amphorae and anchors that were discovered deep within the sea and a remarkable collection that will transport you back to the mediaeval era. Now, come closer a bit because I’m about to leak a secret to you. Although it’s not on display just yet, there’s a rich fund of mediaeval artefacts waiting to be unveiled in the future, and it will have its own dedicated pavilion. So, make sure to keep an eye out for it!
